POPUP project is an art organization based on the idea of an alternative exhibiting platform. The name of the project itself refers to the inconsistent structure which, like advertising space on web pages, mercilessly pops up and imposes itself on the consumer. The starting point of POPUP has a social dimension as well because the goal is to culturally liven up the many unused places in the center of the city by introducing occasional artistic actions and exhibitions. It is that kind of practice that enables us to skip the often impermeable and unprogressive galleries and museums. The POPUP exhibitions/projects usually last one day and are developed according to specific requirements of the exhibited material and in harmony with the space that is chosen. Also, as a platform, POPUP unites and calls for cooperation and suggestions from different structures of contemporary art and related interdisciplinary areas.

POPUP emphasizes experiment and exploration. It is a way through which we’re not trying to achieve a set goal because it doesn’t really exist. Moreover, the main emphasis is on the exploration and constant questioning and rethinking of that goal which means that the purpose of the project is a constant search for a specific form of artistic expression. Being independent of institutions and in a certain way a guerrilla position enables that the exhibitions are not made according to the model of ‘verified value’, but that there’s a dosage of risk in every single one. As a consequence of constant quest, reevaluation, and thinking comes an open and flexible approach that does not insist on producing final answers. In accordance to that, the role of the POPUP project is to constantly reinterpret and re-contextualize all aspects of contemporary art practice.
